Sightings of ghost ships abound in the tiny, close-knit community of Harbourville.
Local lore maintains the presence of three-masted schooners who make port in Harbourville on the first new moon of every equinox.
Translation: the time or date that the sun crosses the equator; making night and day of approximately equal length all over the earth.
Translation of translation: around March 21 and Sept. 22.
Outsiders may scoff at ships mysteriously appearing from a sudden fog bank, but some of the locals insist this isn’t just some tall fish tale.
“I saw one 30 years ago, but it didn’t have the sails,” said one woman.
Added Capt. Greg Hamilton of Vicky & Boys: “I’ve seen things on the radar that never seem to be there and I can’t really explain it,” he smiled as he shrugged his shoulders. “That’s as far as I’ll go with that one.”
