A TEENAGE girl sparked a space mystery yesterday by claiming she was hit on the foot by a METEORITE.
Siobhan Cowton, 14, said the 2in rock smouldered after it fell from the sky and bounced off her toes as she stood outside her home.
And it was still hot when she picked it up.
Excited Siobhan looked up scientific sites on the internet —and became convinced the black and rust-coloured rock was an iron-based meteorite.
She said: “It will be amazing if it turns out to be from outer space.
“Everyone was really shocked. My dad said the odds of it happening was like winning the Lottery — though I think I would prefer the money.”
Siobhan, of Northallerton, North Yorks, will now send the rock to Durham University for expert analysis. The teenager said she was hit as she stood by the family car waiting to go out.
She added: “It just came out of the sky. It hurt my foot a bit. One side was a black-grey colour and shiny and the other side looked like it had rusted a bit.”
Her dad Niel, 45, said it was amazing that something which may have travelled billions of miles through space had ended up in North Yorkshire.
He added: “It is definitely an item we will treasure.”
