A chain of shops in Pennsylvania has withdrawn boxes of Valentine's Day cards because they carry the Arabic word for holy war.
The Target Corporation in Pittsburgh says it withdrew the cards after a parent interpreted the word Jihad as a veiled terrorist threat.
The cards, published by New York company Scholastic Incorporated, also contained the message "It's Time to Be Mine."
The FBI says it is looking into the origin of the card.
"Jihad" can mean the waging of holy war, or an individual's spiritual fight against evil in themselves.
The publisher says any association with terrorism was unintended, and that it regrets causing any distress.
A spokeswoman said the card in question was a portion of a photo and riddle from "I Spy School Days," published in 1995. "Jihad" was the name of a child in a class the author visited, the publisher said.
Scholastic said it changed the name in subsequent reprints of the book to Jared in 2001, but the Valentine's cards used the original artwork.
