Two killed, 31 wounded in suicide bombing in Jerusalem

By Jonathan Lis, Anshel Pfeffer, and Haim Shadmi, Ha'aretz Correspondents - Two people - a man and a woman - were killed and 31 were injured in a suicide bombing in a supermarket on Uruguay Street in Jerusalem's Kiryat Yovel neighborhood shortly before 2 P.M. on Friday afternoon.

One of the injured is in serious condition, one is in moderate condition and the rest are suffering from light wounds.

A section of the explosive device, which did not detonate, was removed from the scene by security forces, Israel Radio reported.

The Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, a militia linked to Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat's Fatah movement, claimed responsibility for the attack, and identified the female bomber as Ayat Akhras, 16, from the Deheisheh refugee camp near Bethlehem.

The injured were taken to the Hadassah University Hospital Ein Karem and to the Sha'are Zedek Medical Center.

Jerusalem police chief Mickey Levy said that the security guard at the entrance to the supermarket attempted to prevent the bomber from entering and saved a large number of lives.
