| Chester Township- It's a Soay sheep, said the man from Oregon. It probably escaped from a local farm.
Bah. It's probably a goat, said a visitor to Cryptomundo.com, a Web site that pursues the most elusive animals on Earth (from Bigfoot to Nessie).
And so the theories go - from Canada to the United Kingdom to Chester's O'Riley's Pub & Grille. A mystery beast that has puzzled residents for months is now vexing animal-watchers worldwide.

The British Broadcasting Corp. and a Canadian radio program called the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo to discuss the creature. A German journalist with a blog on the "paranormal and frontier sciences" e-mailed The Plain Dealer seeking information. Newspapers from Wisconsin, Florida, North Dakota and Illinois have published reports about the creature, and other Web sites like Cryptomundo mentioned the story.
Chester Police Chief Mark Purchase has fielded dozens of calls from zoo sleuths and never heard the same guess twice.
"There seems to be a difference of opinion," Purchase said. "But everyone's positive they're right."
So what's the best bet?
Many callers and e-mailers labeled the beast as some variety of sheep. Others saw evidence of the goat family tree in the published photograph.
One person wondered whether the mystery animal could be some kind of antelope.
Whatever it is, animal experts said it isn't native to Ohio. After that tidbit, however, they seemed as stumped as the average person thumbing through a National Geographic.
