It will join a series of organised walks already upand-running and take in the city's maritime, literary, and architectural highlights.

Council leader Mike Storey asked for the idea of a Haunted Trail to be explored after it was suggested to him by a resident.

He said: "There is so much about the history of Liverpool that it seems around every corner lurks a story to be told.

"I have asked the tourism office to look into the idea of a haunted walk."

The walk would be used by not only tourists, but spooked out residents and even children learning about the city's history.

Local author Tom Slemen, whose books and broadcasts about paranormal activity have won him fans across the world, said: "I set up a ghost walk around the city centre earlier this year and hundreds of people turned up.

"It became so popular that we had to make it a ticket only event."

He added: "The city has a wealth of stories to draw on, particularly those places of Victorian origin."

Just one small section of the city centre could be used on the Haunted Trail taking in these ghostly locations.

* H&M, on Church Street, was known as Hendersons in 1960 when fire ravaged the building and 11 people were killed. Since then scores of staff have reported mysterious sightings and, in the early hours of the morning, figures have been seen fleeing the building.

* At Bluecoat Chambers, in Church Alley, a figure of a woman or girl has been seen staring out of the window. Little is known about her other than the fact that she wears a Victorian- style nightshirt.

* At the Neptune Theatre, former owners the Crane Brothers are known to have spooked out actors and stage hands over the years.

* Visitors to Waterstones on Bold Street will be surprised to know that the store has often been linked with paranormal behaviour. In 1996 an off-duty policeman was the latest of a string of shop-pers to have a vision as he was walking past the store. The world around him transformed and the store became a ladies haberdashery and a Caplins Boxcar drove past.

* At St Luke's Church on Berry Street the most common sighting is of a Victorian man in a top hat, while other people have reported hearing a church organ.
