The US and Russia are still involved in a incredibly dangerous game of military brinkmanship in the Black Sea:
- US has sent one warship the USS McFaul to the Georgian port city of Batumi, with a second warship (USS Mount Whitney) and a U.S. Coast Guard cutter (Dallas) enroute to deliver supplies as well. The USS McFaul docked at Batumi on Sunday, and was initially to dock in Poti, which is currently under Russian Naval control.
Sailors on USS McFaul unload cargo.. 55 tons in all.
A high ranking Russian general has condemned the action. Russian Col. Gen. Anatoly Nogovitsyn noted "I don't think such a buildup will foster the stabilization of the atmosphere in the region,"
USS Mount Whitney is enroute to a Georgian Port to offload supplies.
It is important to note the following:
THE USS MOUNT WHITNEY WAS LAUNCHED IN 1970, IT IS CURRENTLY 38 YEARS OLD, and spent much of its time docked in Gaeta, Italy. If there ever was a more expendable US Military asset this is it. Sailor's aboard it nicknamed themselves 'The Rust Fighters.'
Medvedev accuses US of supplying Georgia with weapons through naval warships, a claim which the US strongly denied..
RUSSIA TURNS WARSHIP AROUND SENDS IT BACK TO BLACK SEA TO 'TEST FIRE MISSILES..'
Russia's flagship cruiser has re-entered the Black Sea for weapons tests hours after the Russian military complained about the presence of US and other Nato naval ships near the Georgian coast. There are currently nine NATO warships inside the black sea.
The Moskva carries P-500 Bazalt (NATO SS-N-12 Sandbox) missiles, a supersonic liquid propelled cruise missile, capable of carrying either a 350 kiloton nuclear warhead or a 1000kg conventional warhead at speeds up to Mach 2.8 (.9km / second). Translation : We do not want to get into a shooting match with this thing. Nato warships would have a lifespan in the Black Sea of minutes if shooting broke out.
Poti is under Russian Patrol, and control. Batumi has a US warship docked unloading supplies (about 30 miles away). All that has to happen is a 'incident' either now, or when the rust-bucket USS Mount Whitney comes with a pile of supplies to help Georgia. An incredibly dangerous game of brinkmanship which today is FAR WORSE than even the cuban missile crisis of October 1962.
Moscow officials called the US warship's presence near the Georgian port Batumi "provocative" and "unhelpful," pointing out the presence of a squadron of Russia's Black Sea fleet stationed only some 50 kilometres north, in the vicinity of the Georgian port Poti.
US ALMOST SENT COAST GUARD CUTTER TO POTI ON WEDNESDAY MORNING...
The United States has canceled plans to try to dock a military ship carrying humanitarian aid in the Georgian port of Poti, where Russian forces are posted on the outskirts, a U.S. Embassy spokesman said Wednesday.
The ship, the Coast Guard cutter Dallas, was to have come to the Black Sea port Wednesday morning. But embassy spokesman Stephen Guice said the vessel instead will dock in Batumi, a port well south of the zone of fighting in this month's war between Russia and Georgia.
Guice said he did not have information on why the plan was changed.
Poti's port reportedly suffered heavy damage from the Russian military. In addition, Russian troops have established checkpoints on the northern approach to the city and a U.S. ship docking there could have been seen as a direct challenge. |
