Footprints in the ash

By Sid PerkinsMay 29th, 2008Web edition

Humans may have been walking around what is now central Mexico 40,000 years ago

HUMAN PRINTSFootprints (one left) left in volcanic ash that fell in central Mexico’s Valsequillo Basin about 40,000 years could be evidence that humans have inhabited the Americas far longer than previously confirmed. Laser scans of the prints (right) confirm their human origins, the researchers report today at the American Geophysical _Union_ meeting.Gonzalez

Footprints left in volcanic ash that fell in central Mexico’s Valsequillo Basin about 40,000 years ago are evidence that humans have inhabited the Americas far longer than previously confirmed, a new study suggests.

Analyses of three-dimensional laser scans of the imprints (example at right) confirm their human origin, says Silvia Gonzalez, a geoarchaeologist at Liverpool John Moores University in England.

Previous finds of human remains elsewhere in the region couldn’t be precisely dated because they were found in layers of mixed gravels that probably incorporated materials of many different ages.

However, a new analysis of the coarse-grained, print-ridden volcanic ash — which would have hardened quickly after it fell, says Gonzalez — strongly suggest the material fell around 40,000 years ago, she and her colleagues reported today in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., at a meeting of the American Geophysical Union.

Excavations at several sites have suggested that humans have inhabited the Western Hemisphere for at least 20,000 years, but results suggesting dates of occupation before 14,000 years ago typically haven’t been confirmed and remain controversial.

Nevertheless, says Gonzalez, recent excavations at a site in Baja California have unearthed a rock shelter containing heaps of shells that have been carbon-dated as 44,000 years old, a finding that bolsters the notion that people lived throughout the region about 40 millennia ago.

------

I have always maintained that humans lived longer than current mainstream science states. This evidence will be validated in the months to come, but so far, all tests/evidence confirms the find. As our tech and understanding grows, I still believe that date will keep getting pushed further and further back.

That's quite interesting, I too believe that humans have been around for quite a while. Possibly in some form during the period after the dinosaurs. But that's a long long time ago, quite a bit farther back than this.

Cool story. Smile

I agree. I have believed for a long time now that homo sapiens sapiens, go back way further than the agreed upon current thinking states.

I fall into the camp that believes neandarthals come from homo neandarthalensis??sp??..not directly related to us. We did not branch off, and definitely aren't decendant from neandarthals.

There's too much evidence for humans and neandarthals co existing during the same periods in time. IMO, it won't be too much longer before we can push the 100,000 yr mark of modern man.

Rath,

yes. We did talk about your post on austrailians settling america..This one is a recent actual find in Mexico (or at least the article is recent,) about this. This article doesn't equate the find to an austrailian origin..

There are quite a few articles on this very subject of ancient modern humans. Yours, and this one, are but a couple..

If this footprint is the exact find that sparked your austrailian posts, my apologies, I didn't remember the reason for the post. Only that you were offering the viewpoint of the origins/migrations of modern man.

Mexicans 40,000 years ago? Damn, Mencia was right. Mexicans did own America first.

Homo Sapiens has been around for 130000 to 250000 years, maybe not always in Europe but elsewhere. 20000 is fairly recent maybe 10000 years after Homo Neanderthalensis dispappeared, and Homo Sapiens co-existed with them for nearly 75000 years.

Not only does science state that modern humans/cro-magnons have been around for some 200 thousand years or so, at the sites where they have found these oldest known human remains they also found weapons and tools, and other evidence of human living (fire pits, clothing, animal remains with cut marks from stone tools, etc). Footprints that are supposedly 40 thousand years old is nice, but there is absolutely no other evidence that suggests man lived in the America's that long ago, the footprints are an unexplained enigma. The oldest evidence of modern man in the America's is only about 20 to 25 thousand years old, and it's nowhere near Mexico.

Yes, but like any "find" in science, you can't dismiss the facts simply because it goes against the accepted "believed" theories. Fact is a 40,000 yr old human footprint has been identified where one "supposedly" shouldn't be...

Don't forget, science also denied gorillas existed until they were discovered in 1901. Just because little evidence exists, doesn't mean that man didn't walk southern americas 40,000 yrs ago. The debate is going on now within the scientific community.

Fact is, no one can credibly argue away that there has been found a human footprint dating 40,000yrs ago. And it has been dated using the same methods science uses to date other things of the same ilk. So, if the method is faulty, then ALL theories and claims made based on similar methods needs to be re-examined.

The question surrounding this peticular subject is, was the human civilization even older than we think it is today?

Exactly, saturos. That's why I think one shouldn't dismiss this simply because it is just one piece of evidence of an earlier era where it appears man existed.

Obviously, the area should be thouroughly studied to see what else turns up there, if anything. I do realize one find of a few footprints (over 200 to be more accurate) does NOT equate to an entire civilization. But, you cannot deny it is amazing that there is EVEN a single footprint that has been successfully dated to 40,000yrs ago relating to early humans.

btw, human remains have also been found in the same area, but due to work in the area, mixing of layers of Earth, there's, now, no way to date them (according to another article on this subject.) see below:

The researchers also used argon-argon, uranium series and electron spin resonance techniques to date the layers. “The footprints are clearly older than 38,000 years,” says team member Tom Higham of the carbon-dating lab at the University of Oxford, US.

There is a guy named Klaus Dona who are researching ancient artifacts and stuff like that, and if im not misstaken he has found things like plates and stuff from tens of thousands years ago.

I was listening to him on the paracast some months ago, so if your into stuff like this i strongly recommend you to listen to their shows with him.
