Forgive me for crowing about him but Pittsburgh's own George A. Romero should recieve a Life Time Achievement Award from those Brain Dead people that run the Oscars....
Who else could make the classic NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1968) filmed on a miniscule budget and shot during weekends and in turn grossed over One Million Dollars ?
And be placed in NYC's Museum Of Modern Art's Film Library ?
NOLD if you have'nt seen it shows us the struggle of several survivors in Western PA fighting off a horde of flesh eating zombies with only one Winchester and their wits.
Sadly it does not have happy ending and the main charcter Ben gets plugged between the eyes by a member of a Pennsylvania Citizens Defense Group after seeing all those around him die...
The films atmosphere is accentuated by its Black and White film and claustrophobic...Not to mention we see the omnipresent Government Conspiracy to coverup the return of the not so dearly departed due to a Space Probe that was destroyed too late to prevent an influx of high radiation...Remember Vietnam was still raging when this film was shot....
This film is memorable from the appearance of Bill "Chilly Billy" Cardille role as a Field reporter. Cardille was a fixture in Pittsburgh both as a news commentator and Saturday Night Horror Show Host.
One scene that will always chill me is when little Karen Cooper who was bitten by one of the ghouls and who we felt sympathy for turns into one of the creatures and murders her unsuspecting mother with a trowel...
Romero would surpass himself in 1979 with the outstanding DAWN OF THE DEAD which shows a Female TV Network Worker, Her Chopper Pilot, and two SWAT Members fleeing when TSHTF to the Monroeville Mall where they hole up and become mesmerized by the Material Wealth around them despite the fact the Lving Dead grow in number....
Only when a Biker Gang which includes Tom Savini attacks their haven do they wake up and come to their senses with the loss of half their number...
SOME OF THE BEST SCENES FROM DOTD
I'm not calling these Freedom Classics but they do feature Romero's insightful commentary on Vietnam, Government Protection, and Mateiralism in society...Plus the main characters are not hesitant to use firearms to defend themselves
BTW you also may want to check out THE CRAZIES aka CODE NAME TRIXIE (1975) which was the inspiration for OUTBREAK
Way to George ! |

My Brother Mark had a classmate at Rutgers who came from Western PA and lived right near the Farmhouse where they filmed NOLD
Also met Ken Foree, Gaylen Ross, and Tom Savini from DOTD and they were all nice folks to talk and work with....I plan to visit Pittsburgh one day and tour the Monroeville Mall
Lastly my friend Eric grew up in that region and told me Romero is considered quite the Folk Hero for bringing noteriety and visitor $$$$ in the Pittsburgh region for all his Living Dead flicks....
BTW What if George Romero and THE BEATLES worked together ?

Horror epic!
I still find Night scarier though. |

I think if he was being chased by flesh eating zombies, even Aquarian wouldn't be hesitant to pick up a puppy and use it as a nunchuck. |

I do.
I disliked LAND OF THE DEAD.
Loved Dawn of the Dead and have seen the older versions and I still say the new Dawn of the Dead is better. I also love the Resident Evil trilogy. |

I liked Land of the Dead when I watched it in the cinema but the 2nd time it didnīt feel so good...
Anyway when it comes to a horror feeling in the Resident Evil Trilogy, the 2nd one fails although as an action movie itīs good.
The first one was the best in my opinion, the other 2 are close.
Hope Resident Evil Degeneration is alot better since itīs like a video game movie |

I hope so too.
I do wonder if such events can occur in real-life. |
