A little math problem for you:
You're a jet jockey flying a cool little 1200-mile-an-hour sled that gulps down 2 thousand kilos of fuel an hour at cruising speed, about 600 miles an hour. You've been flying for about an hour already; at top speed your bird consumes 4 thousand kilos an hour and that's about what's left. The airliners are moving between 400 and 600 miles an hour and they're over 500 miles away. To add to the problem, there's conflicting reports of where the targets are and there's more than one target.
Are you with me so far? You can do aerial refueling but there's no tanker within the area; if there was one, the process still takes at least half an hour, plus time to get the tanker up, so estimate about 1-1/2 hours to get refueled. Even with good data, the targets are out of range; to get there quickly enough to shoot, you'll run yourself out of gas. The planes would still hit their targets.
I agree that we should have been ready for such an attack and believe me, I was (and still am) VERY upset that we weren't. The airheads that make important decisions about what defenses we need and what we don't really blew it. For all of you... the real criminals were the ones responsible for allowing such a fiasco to be possible, and the terrorists that hijacked the planes.
The short version of this would have read "Real life is not like a flight simulation game". Our current President was an interceptor pilot, which is why he didn't question the pilots' decision. He already knew why they didn't attack, and now you do, too. |

| Hadn't taken into account fuel consumption prior to the event. What about planes on the ground? Are there only emergency responce pilots in Alaska? Even without them, the nearest airforce base was how far away? They couldn't get three interceptors off the ground and to target in 2 hours? |

hehehehehe ... you're quite the comedian today, eh martiandrifter?
"Our current President was an interceptor pilot" ... BWAAA HAAA HAAA!!!
That's what he must have been doing when he was AWOL most of the time ... he was off taking flying lessons ... right? It's all perfectly clear to me now. That must have been why they didn't throw his ass in the stockade ... they knew that in reality he wasn't AWOL, he was taking flying lessons.
GWB couldn't even fly an ultralight without a co-pilot to do the actual flying.
You crack me up martiandrifter. |

Ninor, your ignorance is showing. Please cover it, you're embarrassing us grownups. 2 points for your attempted flame, but -5 points for your idiocy.
SRO, that's what upsets me. All those years of Cold War stuff, protecting the US and Canada from "the Russkies and the Chinks", and we never set up proper defenses against attack inside our own borders. With all the cutbacks of the '80s and '90s, a lot of capability was lost. So many air bases closed! When I signed up, the USAF was about 3/4 million strong; in 2001 it was more like 1/4 million.
Blame mindless taxpayers, overly generous military purchases like the B-2 Spirit and self-serving Senators and Congressmen (like Ted Kennedy and Barack Obama). It all added up to disaster, just like it did in the past. In 1941, it was battleships and sailors; 60 years later it was part of our largest city and a lot of citizens.
This is why I "get emotional" on some of my posts; some people spend so much time inventing conspiracies and pointing fingers that they never see what really happened. |

An Accurate yet pointless argument.
Prepare to survive and fight. The time for debate and considerstion has past. Buy food and weapons for you're family, the rest will be taken care of by those you appose, they have no mercy and that will become apparent to all soon enough. |

Martinadrifter wants us to believe that out of the 1600+ active United States military Fighter Jets, not a single one of them could intercept any of the three "hijacked" Airliners in their own airspace.
Either the whole US military is totally inept, or they were ordered by high ranking officials not to intercept them. I'm going to go with option number two. |

| Actually that sounds completely believable to me. That may well have been the case. I'm still going with some other unforseen variable in the collapses though. I doubt you'd be able to convince me there. |

My days of trying to convince you of anything ended last weekend. I've realized that only time and experience will be able to do that. |

Bringing it up on completely unrelated grounds now are we? Sour or something?
Get over yourself. Keep your falsely conceived notions, you didn't convince me of anything, no. What you've failed to observe mister All Knowledgeable is that you're completely wrong, I'm not "shallow" or anything close to it. You don't know me ,obviously, I can't stress it enough. You don't come close to knowing me, and when you do, THEN you can pass judgement on my character. |
