Whats funny about me (a christian) is that I agree with the atheist on this particular concept.
I believe that one can be "saved" or "englightened" or whatever one wishes to call it, simply by being a good person and "doing not unto others that you would not have done unto you", whether or not they ever heard of the bible, god, christ, or whatever the case may be. to me, it is the CONCEPT that has the saving power, not the person/source of that knowledge.
To me, at this stage, I believe Christ was merely a "motivator" to those who were blind to those truths....not that he wished to be worshipped, just that he wished to awaken logic in the minds of those who were blinded by empty religion. |

The verse that has now been dumbed down and clichéd, actually was "Love thy neighbor as yourself." And, it was just part of an answer to a question posed by religious zealots who wanted to know the greatest Commandment. Love thy neighbor as thyself, said Jesus, is the 2nd greatest Commandment.
The verse has quite a deep meaning when you really look at it. It comes as no surprise that an Atheist (obviously not very fond of "Christers," a.k.a. bible-believing Christians) would take such a convenient, shallow approach to the matter.
It's utterly absurd to suggest that a Christian wouldn't do anything nice or good unless the bible told them to do it. In fact, it's no less shallow for the Atheist to say that about Christians, than for a Christian to say, "Isn't it weird how Atheists reject morality?"
Here's the difference: All human beings at some point or another in their lives are driven toward hate of another. Upon noticing the negative build-up, the Christian stops right away and does anything and everything to prevent it; even feeling compelled in many cases to do something nice for the person. But philisophically speaking, the Atheist feels no such obligation whatsoever and has the right and the freedom to hate anyone he/she wants with reckless abandon.
It could be said that the Christian is actually being selfish, holding their hate in check simply because Jesus said so or because God is watching. Likewise, the Atheist who willfully chooses to love rather than to hate could be doing so simply because they don't want to lose the benefit of being liked by others.
As far as the original post goes, the Atheist is acting morally superior, and therefore just like the "Christers" he/she loathes so much. |

You'd be better off reading the Bible and then you'd know first hand what the Bible says and wouldn't have to ask others for their opinion.
