My connection is a bit sluggish right now so I did a speed test.
Seems like different meters can be quite different for whatever reason, though I think some may perposefully underestimate or overestimate speed, especially to try to get you to buy into another ISP.
What is the best meter in terms of number of allowed tests and accuracy?
For shits and giggles, maybe we can find out who here has the fastest connection. Don't ask me why...I must be very bored.
The screenshot below is from http://www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/ .
I think the main thing I'll compare is the 1MB file download time. |

sweet.
What was your time to d/l a 1MB file, around 3.5 seconds? That's like 45 minutes for a full length dual-layer DVD. kick ass |

If you look at the screenshot, it's the third item. |

Tried it. It seems to indicate that I am indeed running slower than normal:
dslreports.com speed test result on 2006-07-08 20:17:22 EST:
2898 / 53
Your download speed : 2898 kbps or 362.2 KB/sec.
That is 51.8% worse than an average user on your ISP
Your upload speed : 53 kbps or 6.6 KB/sec.
That is 86.8% worse than an average user on your ISP |

| your download speed isn't bad if you have an advertised 3meg connection particularly if using cable (which is shared with other users to some extent) your upload speed on cable should be closer to 256 or so or even higher if you are on dsl. If you had no uploads or downloads going at the time I would be concerned that you might have some spyware on your computer that is sending data out and dropping your speed. |

Could be as simple as another user's on my wireless network heavy use. I'm trying their tweak suggestions just in case. |

ADSL in California (avg. 0.86 Mbits/sec)
T-1 (max. 1.54 Mbits/sec) I realize a lot of people think AOL sucks, but it's came a long ways in the last 5 years, and one of the smartest things thev'e did is made it possible to have aol plus broadband for around $26.00 a month. |

Well, at least it's free, theoretically. Free except for all the crap you have to put up with.
My internet connection, while not subjectively "great," is also "free."
Hooray for free **it. |
