Somewhat silly article from Pravda:
Recently many reports appeared talking about the weird creatures, the so-called skyfish. It remains unclear whether the animals are fish, birds or worms.
The mysterious beings have long worm-like bodies with wide projections on their sides (like those of fish). The trouble is, they don't live in water - they live in the air.
No one has come up with a decent name for the animals as of yet. Some suggestions include 'flying sticks,' 'solar entities,' and 'skyfish.'

hmmm... I'm always leary about those Pravda news articles.
That being said, atmospheric life would not surprise me in the least. Atmospheric life on Earth, Jupiter or some other planet might very well be possible.
In his book "Cosmos" Carl Sagan theorized that life could exist in Jupiter's upper atmosphere. Cosmos is an extraordinary book, written by an extraordinary man. I highly reccomend this book to anyone interested in the possibility of life beyond Earth.
Wikipedia has a brief description Carl Sagan's theory, here:
It is considered highly unlikely that there is any Earth-like life on Jupiter, as there is little water in the atmosphere and any possible solid surface deep within Jupiter would be under extraordinary pressures. However, in 1976, before the Voyager missions, Carl Sagan hypothesized (with Edwin Ernest Salpeter) that ammonia-based life could evolve in Jupiter's upper atmosphere. Sagan and Salpeter based this hypothesis on the ecology of terrestrial seas which have simple photosynthetic plankton at the top level, fish at lower levels feeding on these creatures, and marine predators which hunt the fish. The Jovian equivalents Sagan and Salpeter hypothesized were "sinkers", "floaters", and "hunters". The "sinkers" would be plankton-like organisms which fall through the atmosphere, existing just long enough that they can reproduce in the time they are kept afloat by convection. The "floaters" would be giant bags of gas functioning along the lines of hot air balloons, using their own metabolism (feeding off sunlight and free molecules) to keep their gas warm. The "hunters" would be almost squid-like creatures, using jets of gas to propel themselves into "floaters" and consume them. |

I was wondering the same thing. You guys say they're "rods". Is this a cryptozoological term? |

Can't help it, I'm just ignorant.
After looking at the links, I would have to agree. Definitely rods.
Liked the Sagan stuff about the floaters, sinkers and hunters. I read that book (Cosmos) when I was a kid, and loved it. I still remember that picture (an artists rendition) of what Jupiter's atomsphere might look like populated by all sorts of exotic life. |

Years ago, there was a BV member by the name of JohnBro. He spent hours taking pictures of rods, using the "Johnbro technique". He had some cool pictures of rods. Anyway... you can still see some of his work at http://www.skymonsters.com/jbFaves.html
Here's a sample of JohnBro's work:

This is for you poor, uneducated fools like Mr Mite
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=thZUbihOEPU
I believe in rods, as the explanations I have heard just don't seem very strong. The main explanation i've heard is that they are actually normal insects flying past cameras at such a rate that it creates a kind of blurred trail, making them seem much bigger than they are. However, I have seen insects move past a camera at speed and they don't look like the rods do. Also, when a rod turns, it does it very smoothly. If it was just blurring, i'd expect it not to be as smooth and the body not to be as consistent. |
