An assortment of new security features in Windows Vista will help many consumers become "secure enough," but businesses are unlikely to abandon their current levels of additional, backup security if they adopt the new operating system, some experts say.

Among more than a dozen security features within Vista are improvements such as the malicious software removal tool, smart card and log-on authentication changes, user access controls, USB device controls, Windows defender and Windows firewall.

But none of these, even in combination, should be seen as a panacea, security professionals say, and the need for a layered approach to security remains as critical as ever.

Stuart Okin, security partner at Accenture and former U.K. head of security at Microsoft, told Silicon.com: "As I see it, there are 15 security features in Vista and none of them are this great panacea where if you install them the world will be OK.

Nothing is perfect and nothing is a panacea. Vista will work better than

previous systems but with the "trade-off"being less user defined options.

If one is truly searching for some kind of autonomy with regards to

their OS then "open source" is for you. Being that I am continually

upgrading computer hardware it is imperative that an extended

current driver data base is included in my OS as a foremost priority.

I'm going MacOSX soon anyway so Vista is the least of my concern.

Windows XP and W2K already have the Malicious Software Removal Tool built into them. All you have to do to access it is go: Start > Run, and type in "mrt" (without the quote marks of course) and it'll launch the program GUI. Personally, I've never found it of much use, for one thing you have to keep up with your Windows updates in order to keep it's database up to date. I just run my own little cocktail of adware/malware/anti-virus detectors and Firewall(s), which includes: Pest Patrol, Spybot S & D, Spyware Blaster, AVG Free and the built in Windows Firewall (in tandem with my linksys hardware firewall).
