Richard's Room 101 - "Future History - The Next Hundred Years in Space?": http://binnallofamerica.com/rr10.12.8.html
"I've always had an interest in science fiction and the future of space travel. So this fortnight, I thought we might try something a little different...a possible timeline for the next hundred years or so in space. ...
In the timeline, I've tried to predict future events and breakthroughs as best I can. The first third is pretty much based on NASA's plans for the future, but after 2033 I've had to rely more on the writings of futurists and visionaries like Michio Kaku, Robert Zubrin and Ray Kurzweil, plus some old fashioned guess work.
If any of these predictions seem too fantastic or impossible to achieve in the next hundred years, just think how far we've come over the last century or so. Back in 1903, many mainstream scientist still thought heavier-than-air flight was impossible...never mind travelling faster-than-sound or walking on the Moon! So, when it comes to the future, its probably best to keep an open mind and wait and see."

All very bold. I would like to think these things will happen in the 21st century but there is a problem. The world is moving towards socialism, big all powerful governments. Invention will pretty much come to a halt in that world. In that world the only things that get invented are produced by government, and that happens at a snail's pace compared to the progress of the 20th century.
I noticed the inclusion of the typical America bashing in your predictions. But like most America bashing it never mentions the real cause of the problems. The more the U.S. moves towards socialism, the more it becomes irrelevant in the world. What good is a melting pot if everyone is forced to be the same?? Answer: none.
"Where are the flying cars? We were supposed to have flying cars!" Well, you don't really expect that to happen anytime soon, do you? Ain't gonna be no flying cars. Not while Al Gore is still alive. In fact, he's gonna get rid of most of the planes we have now (well, except his of course). We're going backwards not forwards. Next, everybody out of houses and into cookie box apartments (ala Isaac Asimov's, The Caves of Steel).
And since you mentioned science fiction writers, and I mentioned Issac Asimov, you talked about the "singularity". Not sure why it would be called that, but ok. If computers become smarter than Humans, as you and Asimov predicted, then what will you need Humans for anymore? Answer: slave labor, hence the move to socialism.
You aren't going to have any sort of future that you described if things keep going the direction they are presently. Socialism has destroyed the engine of technological progress as it set out to do, and Atlas has shrugged as a result.
I predict that the next 30 - 40 years we will see the re-enslavement of the Human race. All religion will be abolished. The 21st century will look more like the 15th century than it will the 20th century. Progress ebbs and flows. Right now, its ebbing, and its a long way down.
I hope you are right and I am wrong. |
